drop the ball : To make a mistake, especially when you didn’t complete one of your responsibilities.

drop the ball : 실수를 하다

baseball 야구에서 나온 idiom입니다. 공을 떨어뜨리는 것 = 실수를 하다

예문

Let's not drop the ball again. 다시는 실수를 하지 말자.

Just don't drop the ball with your son. 자식 문제로 실수를 하지 마라.

They drop the ball, we get the call. 그들이 실수를 해서, 우리가 전화를 받는다.

take a shot at / give it your best shot :

The idiom “take a shot at” means to try something (often something difficult). 

To “give it your best shot” means to try your best.

take a shot at : ~를 시도하다

give it your best shot : 최선을 다하다

take a shot at은 ~을 겨누다 라는 뜻도 있지만 basketball 농구에서 나온 idiom은 시도해 보다 라는 뜻이 있습니다.

give is your best shot은 football 축구에서 나온 idiom으로, 아마 그대로 해석한것과 거의 차이가 없죠, 최선을 다하다 라는 뜻입니다.

예문

I'll take a shot at the job. 그 직장에 취직을 한번 시도해 봐야겠어. 

Just give it your best shot and you’ll be fine. 그냥 최대한 한번 시도해 봐. 그러면 괜찮아질 거야.

The idiomatic expression “show someone the ropes” means to teach someone how to do something

show someone the ropes : 요령/방법을 알려주다

show someone the ropes는 sailing 세일링-보트 타기에서 나온 idiom으로 그대로 해석하면 누군가에게 밧줄을 보여주다  인데요, 밧줄을 보여준다는 것이 배를 잘 안다는 것이므로 요령이나 방법을 알려준다 로 연결됩니다.

예문

I'll show you the ropes. 제가 요령을 알려드리겠습니다.

jump the gun : The idiom “jump the gun” means to do something too early or too soon, before the correct time. 

jump the gun : 섣불리 행동하다

jump the gun은 track and field 육상경기에서 나온 idiom입니다.

그래서 예문으로

Athletes who jump the gun will be disqualified. 출발신호 전에 출발하는 선수는 실격 처리된다.

이런 문장이 있습니다. 다른 예문도 같이 볼게요.

Don't jump the gun. 너무 성급하게 굴지 마라.

hit your stride :

The idiom “hit your stride” means to achieve a good continuous level of performance. “Stride” is a word that refers to the steps taken while walking or running.

hit your stride : 컨디션을 되찾다, (자신감을 갖고) 본격적으로 진행하기 시작하다

hit your stride는 running 또는 horse racing에서 나온 idiom입니다.

그대로 해석하면 전속력으로 나아가다 이고, 전속력으로 나아간다는 것이 말 그대로 본격적으로 한다는 것이겠죠?

예문

She found the job difficult at first, but now she's got into her stride and she loves it.

그녀는 처음에 그 일이 어렵다고 생각했지만, 지금은 본격적으로 하는 중이고 그 일을 하는 것을 사랑한다.
